The Impact of Culture and Tradition on the Participation of Sudanese Women in Labour Force

Abstract


In Sudan, female participation in the formal (and informal) labour is very low and unemployment is high for those female in the labour force; as women comprise 23 percent of the formal economy, but 70 percent of the informal economy, with the majority of them engaged in agricultural production. Accordingly, the aim of this paper is to investigate the factors behind the low participation of Sudanese women in labour force. Several factors were outlined as the main reasons behind this phenomenon; these may include cultural biases against female education, the place where these women live (Rural vs. Urban Area), and traditional values, where all these factors will be examined critically, as well as proposing certain policies to enhance the participation of women in labour force.
