Abstract

In recent years, economics students have organized themselves to demand that their professors teach economics in a way that is relevant to the real world and that recognizes a diverse set of economic theories and ideas. To aid teachers, student groups like Rethinking Economics, oikos International and the Netzwerk Plurale Ökonomik have begun to develop their own teaching materials and experiment with new methods for teaching students about ‘pluralist’ economics.

This presentation will report on the experience of a workshop entitled “Diversifying the Economic Toolkit” that is based on the new book “Rethinking Economics: An introduction to pluralist economics”. The workshop is aimed at students of all disciplines and (as of February, 2018) has been run over 20 times, with groups as large as 200. Our hope is that the successful elements of this workshop can be translated into more traditional classroom settings by professors who are sympathetic to the students' demands for a more critical, diverse and real world economics.
